SOME THINGS DON'T CHANGE

Sorry for the lack of posting but work's been busy.

So an SU alum co-worker brings me a copy of the D.O. he picked up while at the 'Cuse a few weeks ago. Inside, Maggies advertises $3 for pitchers. It's good to know that beer is still ridiculously cheap in college. And it should be.

Coincidentally, on the same page is a headline that reads "LBJ Spoke at SU." Unfortunately it was about Lyndon Baines Johnson, not John Welsh.

LESSON LEARNED

Stain writes a personal story in response to "Where's Jaquin?":

In supplement to the "Where's Jaquin" post, I would like to share a story about Jake. Now, Being younger than most on this blog, I never knew him while he was active at 131 College Place. But, during my senior year, he did show up out of nowhere in the Spring semester. I
don't recall what he was doing in town or where he stayed, but he was a fixture in the house for a couple of weeks. And then as suddenly as he appeared, he was gone.

Of course during that time, Jake told many stories about the old days and what not. He also had lots of suggestions - and one of his biggest gripes was why there was not keg beer on tap at all times - generally only Thursday through Saturday. I gotta say, Jake had a great point. All it would have taken was a CO2 tank, but then again, storing a potentially expolsive gas in the Crow House probably wouldn't have been the best idea.

Anyway, I have incorporated Jake's vision into my house and had a kegerator built into my kitchen as shown in these photos. Keg fresh beer is always on tap at the Tryka residence. If anybody is ever in SW Florida, be sure to drop by for a ice cold brew.

If anyone else has Crow-inspired home decor, please be sure to forward it to me for posting on the Crow Blog.

TRYKA'S TASTIES...THE WEEKEND EDITION

Needless to say, Virginia Tech-BC was not exactly the best way to start the weekend. But here are 3 more to ease the pain:

South Florida -3.5 at North Carolina – Simply put, UNC is a horrible, horrible team. They are 1-4 on the season with their lone win coming against 1-AA Furman 45-42. They have been giving up points in alarming numbers to the tune of 35.4 per game. USF is a program on the rise coming into this contest at 4-2 with a 38-16 win over UConn. S Florida runs a pretty balanced attack that will have its way with the Tar Heel’s D. Look for the Bulls to send UNC to their 2nd defeat of the year versus the Big East.

Denver -15 vs. Oakland – Well the numbers are finally catching up to Oakland as they enter Denver as huge underdogs. I am a little hesitant to lay this much lumber on a team that is coming off a short week after a tough MNF contest and has trouble scoring. However, we have two things going for us here. First and foremost – Oakland is absolutely terrible and will make Denver look like an offensive juggernaut. Second, Mike Shanahan hates the Raiders and will not hesitate to run up the score. The Broncos win this game big.

New York Jets -2 vs Miami – Am I missing something here? Why are the Jets only favored at home by 2? Do people still believe Miami is a potential playoff team at 1-4? Granted, NY looked bad last week at Jacksonville losing 41-0. But, I still think the Jets are playing better than the Fish. I can’t see Joey Harrington having much success, particularly with an O-Line as bad as the Dolphins. The Jets always play well against Miami. Look for New York to grind out a win against their Division rival that will surely have the home faithful chanting J-E-T-S, Jets, Jets, Jets!

TRYKA'S TASTIES...THURSDAY SPECIAL

4 straight wins has got the Stain Train Rollin’.

Picking against Oakland has been too easy, so I have decided to add another NFL game to compensate. And if we have two NFL games, why not a 2nd college game? My Thursday night special will be posted today with the rest of the picks to follow tomorrow.

Virginia Tech -2.5 at Boston College: This is strictly a feel pick. Virginia Tech was bombed at home a few weeks ago by Georgia Tech. They were outplayed badly – especially on special teams – a Hokie trademark over the years. I have to imagine Frank Beamer has been killing these guys getting them ready for tonight’s game. On the other side, BC has not impressed me at all this year. They did beat Clemson, but had to slide by BYU and Central Michigan and lost to NC State. In addition, two big trends are in Tech’s favor – They have won 8 of their last 9 against BC and have an impressive 10-1 record ATS on ESPN Thursday night football. Look for VT to have a nig night on special teams with a blocked kick or return and will easily cover the small spread.

STOP THE MADNESS

This is a story that broke today:

"(October 10, 2006) — U.S. Senator Charles E. Schumer today will announce plans for a new coalition with his fellow Senators who represent small market National Football League teams designed to assist in their fight to gain a more equitable piece of the league's revenue sharing pie."

Email this jackass and tell him to keep his nose out of football. For crying out loud what is this country coming to!

TRYKA'S TASTIES

With the first 2-0 weekend of the season, the Stain Train is back on track at 4-4. All aboard for this weeks picks:

Wake Forest +17 vs Clemson: Wake Forest rolls into this contest a perfect 5-0, but have played some suspect competition along the way including Liberty, Duke and yes – even Syracuse. Clemson boasts beating BC and Florida State although, with each passing week, those wins look less and less impressive. There is no doubt Clemson is the more talented team here. But, Wake has won two of the last three meetings and they have a pretty solid D which should keep the game low scoring. That should be enough to keep the Demon Deacons within 17 points of a conference foe at home.

San Francisco -3.5 vs Oakland: True to my word, I am not getting off the anti-Oakland bandwagon until they cover a game. Oakland came close last week, but was able to blow an early 21-3 lead at home and ultimately lose the game. San Francisco has shown marked improvement over last year’s team, with a home beating to Philly not-withstanding. At any rate, SF is only favored at home by a just over a field goal which is essentially saying that Oakland and SF are equal teams. I don’t buy that for a minute. Oakland stinks, period. There is no way they are going to win this one on the road. Look for San Fran to win the battle of the Bay Area.

NORDSMEN

According to today's St. Paul Pioneer Press, Vikings fan Andy Saur has created a petition to change the team’s “kickoff” song from Guns N’ Roses’ “Welcome To The Jungle” to Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song,” which is about Vikings coming out of “the land of the ice and snow, from the midnight sun where the hot springs blow.”

In honor of this story, I offer you this picture of Fran, Vikings mascot Ragnar, and Fran's wife Tina . I believe this was taken in Minneapolis just prior to the 1998 NFC title game in Minnesota when the 15-1 Vikes lost to the 14-2 Falcons on a last-second Morten Andersen field goal.

WHERE'S JAQUIN?

Corky writes:
Is that Jaquin in the third photo!?
Quick story on him: I busted my ankle and needed some serious ankle support so he let me borrow his David Robinson Nike's basketball shoes. I had them for a few days and next thing you know I come back one day from class and I see that my room was broken into and the shoes were gone. Apparently Jake had gone home a few days early for spring break. u-guh.
Whatever happened to that guy?

RODNEY

So I recently watched a Comedy Central special on Rodney and almost wet myself.
The guy knew "a lot of f#$%ing jokes!"
Seinfeld, Sander, Rock, Murray, Leno, etc. all talk about Rodney like he was a God. He was the king of standup and apparently did a lot for young comedians. I highly recommend catching it.
His Web site is still up and running and there's some good jokes to be had on it.
