CROW BABIES

There's a lot going on in the Crow baby world. If it's one thing AXPers can do, it's reproduce.

My wife and I are expecting our first child in August. Brother Jerky is expecting his second son any day now. Brother Aero just had his first son. Below is his announcement:

Hugo was born at 815a on January 17 at St Luke's hospital in San Francisco. He's 8 lbs and 19 inches, is healthy, handsome, peeing, and pooping. What could make a couple of new parents more proud? How about this: The midwife said he had the thickest umbilical cord she'd ever seen and an "amazing" placenta. Ha!

PS--It's in bad taste to make fun of Crow children or wives on the Crow Blog.

SUPER BOWL WRAP UP

It's been a while since the big game but I've been busy. So here's how my final two days at Super Bowl went.

Saturday night I go to the coveted NFL Sponsorship party. It was in downtown Miami at an outdoor amphitheater. Pretty cool. Good bars, weak food. Three bands played -- New Edition, REO Speedwagon and Blondie.

NE and REO were actually damn good. They are good examples of old bands than can still jam. Blondie, which headlined (if you can call it that), was by far the weakest. She could not hit the high notes, they played mello tunes and she looked like a 50-year old woman who could have been at the super market. The Tide is Low Blondie.

Next day, it's raining. First time all week. We head to the NFL Tailgate party which is good despite the rain because it's mostly covered. Chris Isaak and Stevie Nicks play. Now it makes sense why I saw Isaak at the Media Center. Isaak is better. Nicks wasn't as bad as Blondie but it's along the same lines.

Regardless, no one really watches bands play at Tailgate anyway. You take endless laps around the huge bash hoping to crash into people you know and like. On the celebrity front, Justin Timberlake was there simply among the partyers. I was surprised that there was no security around him.

More importantly, we also saw S.I. swimsuit model Marissa Miller. My wife spotted her of all things. She was wearing jeans and a grey hoodie that was pulled up over her head. She still looked hot. Pretty girl. It's too bad the outfit didn't show off the bod that pays for her meals. Click on the link for the full effect.

That's about it from the Super Bowl. Bennie and I tried to meet up but it didn't happen. The rain killed our best chance which was to meet during the game. My wife and I had seats in the second row of the upper deck at the 35-yard line. Normally, good seats. But not when it rains for three hours straight. Probably the wettest I've been since Diligence Night (Are you prepared to be branded?!?).

ALSO

I just re-read Spooch's demerit book and almost lost my lunch. It's worthy of another read. It's in the September link. Goodness gracious that stuff is unreal.

SATURDAY UPDATE

Saw Fran's boy K-Fed yesterday. Total tool and not worthy of 1% of the coverage the guy receives.

The ESPN party was not in a ballroom, a building or restaurant. It took up an entire neighborhood. It was huge. There were X-gamers doing stunt tricks and NASCAR cars and Madden Playstation3 games on high-def screens (I defeated the Commissioner's son Ben Baker).

However, it was short on celebs and the gossip that this blog warrants. Only saw some ESPN broadcasters and Derrick Blooks playing a kid in Madden.

Prior to that party, I went with my wife to an NFL sponsorship cocktail party. This was a small (300 people) classy affair at a marina. What's so funny though is that the NFL paid some current and former players to be there -- Dickerson, Marcus Allen, Romo, Brady Quinn, Hasselback. It probably cost the NFL between $10-20K for each of those guys and they're just sitting around talking to each other. Must be nice.

I am hopeful to connect with the Balls of Benwa today as he arrives in Miami for the game.

More important than all of this, this morning I saw the first ESPN promo for the AFL today. It was brief but signals a new era for the League.

PS--Saw Chris Isaack the other day in the media center too. Forgot to mention that.

FRIDAY UPDATE

Seen at today's Media Center: Lots of boxers, Oscar dela Hoya (sp?), Floyd Mayweather, Vitali Klitchko (sp?); also saw Joe Montana and Brady Quinn hug; and Broadway Joe (sober).

Could be some good behind-the-scenes skank action at tonight's ESPN The Mag party. Will let you all know.

EMAILS FROM JACK...

Gutterboy has come out of hybernation and sent a few emails recently:

TO FRAN: outstanding, The yes network here in ny shows episodes (of the White Shadow) at odd hours. Just caught the one where thorpe gets v.d. from coolidge's girlfriend. Reminds me of the time when you thought I was spending too much time in the kitchen with helen, and you cheated on me with pumpkinhead. oh, those are the prescious moments, they don't come back.

TO SQUIG: I just had my terry cloth suit altered and let out a little in the crotch, so I should have no problem finding comfortable clothing for the event.

SQUIG AT SUPER BOWL

An abbreviated account of my time in Miami so far (2/1):

Arrived on Sunday for the AFL Board Meetings on Monday and Tuesday.

Monday: Introduce Joe Horrigan of the Pro Football Hall of Fame to the AFL owners at the Board meeting. Joe is the man who announces the Hall of Fame inductees, which he will do on Saturday. The AFL is getting its first-ever display in the Hall on February 19. I'm coordinating.

Monday night: Russell Athletic, the new uniform supplier of the AFL, puts on a fashion show for the AFL owners, staff and ESPN execs and announcers. They hire two professional female models, two Dolphins cheerleaders and four Orlando Predators dancers. It was arguably the greatest night in AFL history. A great show.

After the runway was finished, Commissioner Baker introduced the new ESPN broadcasters to the crowd (Mike Golic, Mike Greenberg, Trey Wingo, Mark Schlereth, Merril Hoge and Ron Jaworski). For those who don't know, Greenberg and Golic have a very successful morning radio show on ESPN Radio called Mike and Mike. They play off the fact that Golic is a blue collar athlete and that Greenberg is a white collar clutz. True to form, Greenberg trips trying to climb onto the stage and is caught by the Commissioner. Mike and Mike proceed to discuss this for minutes on their show the next day. Greenburg says that Commissioner Baker has a huge head, which he does (he's 6-9, 400 pounds).

Tuesday - Work with John Elway, Jaws and Jon Bon Jovi to try to ensure their attendance for AFL publicity efforts in NYC prior to the kickoff of the AFL's season on March 1.

Tuesday night - Go to the Clevelander for a much needed night of relaxation. Come to the conclusion that people in Miami just don't wear a lot of clothes. Some Bears D-Lineman party's with the women of our group.

Wednesday - Go to the Media Center for the first time and see many of my old NFL cohorts. Bring Commissioner Baker to radio row where he does seven interviews over two hours. Personalities of note at the Media Center (in addition to traditional media): The winner and first runner-up of the 2006 Hooters International Contest; models offering free massages outside the Center.

Thursday - Go back to the Media Center for more Commissioner interviews. But before we start, watch two press conferences, 1) Bill Joel Anthem; 2) Prince Halftime. Bill Joel was one of the weirdest ever. Strange questions, wise-ass answers. 400 people left uncomfortable. He also talked about what a terrible song the National Anthem is.

The Prince press conference was different. True to his strange personality, he had announced weeks before that he wasn't going to speak at his press conference. Instead, he'd let his music speak for him. So he was going to play three songs. I'm skeptical about this because I think it's going to fall flat. He's finally announced and his band comes out in the typical Prince garb, suits, shades and instruments. Two identical hot chicks are part of the group. I'm thinking that this is getting cooler and might actually work. He steps to the microphone and says something like, "I've decided to take some questions," so some guy yells out a question and he says, "Well I think..." and obnoxiously strums his electric guitar and the rest of the band explodes into Johnny B Good. It was very cool. The ultimate rock moment. He answers the question rudely with an awesomely loud sound. He played two more songs. It was great. It was fun to watch a group of people who are really good at something doing what they love. Probably helped that it was a small venue.

Personalities of note: Jarret, the Subway guy; Hooters chicks again; the Burger King 'King'. It's like 9-feet tall.

Thursday night - Watch SB34 replay on NFL Network. Does anyone remember that Boomer Esiason was the MNF announcer for a whole year and for the Super Bowl? I didn't.

Friday...Plan for tomorrow is to attend Commissioner Goodell's press conference and to attend the ESPN The Magazine 'Next' party. I'll keep you updated.

BUZZ, JERKY AND THE ROLLER COASTER

Fran recently spent a weekend at Jerky's ski house in Vermont. Below is his account of an infamous story from the weekend:

"Cab pulls up, aparrently he is the only cab driver in the area and Jerky has known him for many years. As we get in the cab, the two of them are going at each other about banging the others mother/daughter/siter etc. and everything, no holding back.

As we pass the bar we are supposed to stop at, he drives right by it, then Jerky asks him if we are going to do the roller coaster. Next thing I know, we are at the top of this road and the car starts picking up speed going downhill, Joe and Pete are calling him a p@#$%y... then he shuts the car lights off, its pitch black and were probably doing 30-40 mph staright down hill in total blackness."

SINCE WE'VE BEEN GONE...

A look at what's happened in the world (with a Crow focus) since November 18:

-President Ford died.

-Brother Charlie McAteer was blessed with the birth of his second daughter.

-SU hoops has lost to every good team its played.

-Brother Charlie also won the 8-team Crow Fantasy Football League by narrowly defeating Squig in the title match. He has chosen a dinner at Striphouse, a new NYC steakhouse, in honor of his victory.

-The Arena Football League signed a five-year agreement with ESPN. However, the league is still looking for long snappers.

-Lamont set another record for alcohol consumption at a Christmas party. More good news for NY State taxpayers.

-Truth waxed 57 people.

-Jerky received a $600,000 bonus from Goldman Sachs

-The Red Sox spent more than $100 million on the Hideki Irabu of 2007.

IT'S BAAAACK...

Things weren't looking good.

The Crow Blog had been read its last rights. Work was killer and preventing me from posting. There were no submissions from Brothers. SU Athletics was in the toilet.

But then, like paddles electrifying a heart, the Blog was resurrected with one Hamms-tastic image.

And just like that, the Blog is back.

(Brother Stain wears with pride a t-shirt for Hamms beer. Who knew they had Premium? Who knew they had t-shirts?)

PAUL HARRIS

With SU's football season in the dumps, it's time to get excited for hoops. All-Everything freshman Paul Harris had a decent if unspectacular debut this week.

Harris solid in Syracuse debut
Thursday, November 02, 2006

Syracuse freshman Paul Harris came to the Orange with all the hype in the world. The world can stop hyping, because now there's a game with which to evaluate the burly rookie.

Harris made his Syracuse debut Wednesday in the Orange's 92-86 win over Division II Bryant.
Stifled a little by his own admitted nervousness and the Bulldogs' zone defense, Harris had eight points in 21 minutes off the bench. He missed six of nine shots (including a wide-open dunk that he blocked himself by hitting the front of the rim) and committed two turnovers. He grabbed four rebounds, three on the offensive end, and added two steals.

All in all, it was a solid debut for the youngster.

"A lot of pressure is on Paul to come in and do great things," said junior Josh Wright. "We try to keep him level-headed, keep him grounded. I think he came out and played well tonight."
Harris, a 6-foot-5 guard with a power forward's build, was a little harder on himself.

"I actually wanted to play better, but hey, we all have bad games," he said. "I'm not going to get down on myself. We have practice tomorrow. I'll work hard in practice."

Harris entered the game with 16:17 left in the first half to a rousing ovation from the Carrier Dome crowd. About one second later, he had attempted his first shot, an ill-advised 10-foot fadeaway off a baseline out-of-bounds play.

He impressed on defense, hounding the Bryant guards so much so that only senior Chris Burns was able to handle the ball against him. He also kept Burns from scoring for a 3-minute, 30-second stretch in the second half. Burns wasn't held scoreless much. He finished with a game-high 33 points.

Harris struggled on offense against Bryant's 2-3 zone defense. He's a penetrator whose jump shot is the weakest part of his game. "The worst thing that could have happened for Paul was that they played zone the whole game," said SU coach Jim Boeheim. "He's obviously much better, much more suited right now to playing against man-to-man. But I thought he did a good job. I thought he was good on defense. There's just a lot of work to be done. He's not used to playing away from the basket so much. That's something that's going to take time to get used to."

THE KISS

On the last night of partying for the Crow Class of '93, the unthinkable happened. Tulio grabbed the back of Lamont's head and just like Michael Corleone and Fredo in The Godfather, Part II, laid a big, wet, sloppy kiss on the lips of a man famous for them.

This horrific yet glorious act was the subject of some emails recently and below is Tulio's take:

Crow legend says that several brothers urged me on months in advance to do that, but that I resisted stating that it was something that could never be out done, and therefore should be reserved only for our last night in school.

I neither confirm nor deny the supposed facts that make up the legend.

The picture is great. I think it is from Cancun when I was talking on the phone with Jen.

NEW RIVALRY

Check out this posting duel between Sap and Corky. There could be a new Crow rivalry brewing with Romer in the middle. Even when he's trying to stay out, they pull him back in...

I see some things never change. Truth still has some sort of man-love thing going for Romer.

which reminds me, didn't I hear some story that happened after college where Truth was on a trip with Yo Adrian to Vermont (or somewhere) and wheeled the car westward and showed up unannounced at Romer's house? Am I imagining this happened?

Way off, sap. Don't mess with my Big Bro, I'll do a flying wax as you leave your office building this evening. Anyway, I called him the day before a gig while in Stereosoul in Kean college, NH (long story) and told him I'm stopping by on my way home. I showed up, his wife gave me the look of death and we went out for food and drinks for like 4 hours while in the middle of moving in. Timing couldn't have been better.-TruthBTW, go to iTunes and do a search at the iTunes store for Stereosoul.
